Living in Love and Faith Course

How do questions about identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage fit within the bigger picture of the good news of Jesus Christ?
What does it mean to live in love and faith together as a Church?

The Living in Love and Faith project is the Church of England’s national process asking individuals, parishes, deaneries and communities to reflect on matters related to sexuality, gender and relationships.

ECO Day at St Matthias, Saturday 2nd October

Dr Martin Hodson and Revd Margot Hodson from the John Ray Initiative in Oxford (www.jri.org.uk) shared their expertise and learning through a day of free workshops, lectures and hands-on experiences to help us learn more about conservation and how we might play our part to reverse the negative impact of climate change on our environment and on those least able to cope. There were activities for adults and children.

This rare opportunity to hear and interact directly with young people in the region from Palestinian and Israeli backgrounds will be led by “Solutions not Sides”, a charity aiming to tackle antisemitism, anti-Muslim prejudice and polarisation around the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the UK.

Zoom Ephesians Study Group from St Mary, Barnes

St Mary’s, Barnes, are running a series of  Zoom study groups on the Letter to the Ephesians, 6-7pm each Monday from 7th June to 5th July.

The theme has been chosen as it seems apt for this moment in time:

* a profound sense of God’s gift to us of peace and grace in Christ
* teaching on how to live together with others in community, using the gifts of the Spirit

If you would like to take part email Rev James Hutchings revdjames@stmarybarnes.org

Loving Others Course from Holy Trinity Richmond

The phrase ‘pastoral care’ can be very confusing. Just what is ‘pastoral care’? How is it different from any other kind of care? Who gets involved in pastoral care, and who doesn’t? It can all seem rather overwhelming and something that church staff do, so perhaps we should just leave it to them…

But pastoral care is the joy and privilege of every Christian and something that Jesus calls us to be involved with. This four week course is intended to break some of the misconceptions of pastoral care, encourage us to get involved and give some very practical advice on how to care for one another with the love of God. The course runs for four weeks on Thursday evenings, 6, 13, 20, 27 May, from 8pm to 9pm on Zoom. Each evening will consist of some teaching, discussion in small groups and whole group feedback. We would love everyone to be part of the course so if you don’t feel comfortable speaking or sharing via Zoom, don’t let that put you off. You will not be asked to do anything you are not comfortable with.

Anyone is welcome to join in with the course even if you don’t feel you are involved in church ‘leadership’ at the moment. You will get the most out of this course if you can attend all four weeks. However, if you need to miss a week there will be some course materials you can access.

You will need to register for the course so we can send you the relevant Zoom information and course materials. To register click here.

Unity against Loneliness Event 26th April

Richmond Inter Faith Forum invites people from Richmond, Kingston, Hounslow and neighbouring areas – especially those from minority and refugee backgrounds – to join this online event. It follows the successful “Unity in Crisis” event last November.

As we look forward to the end of lockdown, “Unity against Loneliness” provides a unique opportunity for local people from different religion or belief backgrounds (including the non-religious) to consider a subject that can affect anyone, and is so often invisible to everyone else.

What is loneliness? (It’s not as obvious as you might think.) How do we experience it? What steps can we take to alleviate it?

For more details and to register for the event visit https://unityagainstloneliness.eventbrite.co.uk

Everyone living in south west London is welcome.

Poetry Workshops at St Mary’s Barnes

St. Mary’s, Barnes is collecting poems that have helped individuals through lockdown and through times of difficulty. They would like to share these poems with each other through a series of informal poetry workshops on Zoom. The Zoom workshops will take place
on Mondays 19th and 26th April at 6pm.
To register, please send your choice of poem to: catherine.putz@googlemail.com

At the workshop we will read each other our special poems and discuss the aspects of the writing which appeal to us. Afterwards, our poems will be written on cards to be issued to those who would benefit from them, and printed on laminated, decorated sheets kept in church for
our visitors to enjoy.

Recommended books for Lent

Candles in the Dark – Faith, hope and love in a time of pandemic by Rowan Williams (SPCK, 2021). From March to September 2020 Rowan Williams wrote weekly meditations for the congregation of his parish church. They offer light in these dark times and challenge the reader, but always give hope!

Thy Will be done The 2021 Lent Book by Stephen Cherry (Bloomsbury Continuum, 2021). At a time of change, uncertainly and widespread anxiety, we go back to familiar spiritual resources, such as the Lord’s Prayer. Thy will be done presents the comforts and challenges of the prayer in 36 short chapters, one for almost every day in Lent (excluding Sundays).

David’s Crown – Sounding the Psalms by Malcolm Guite (Canterbury Press, 2021). Poems of each of the 150 psalms, to reflect on, go back to and read alongside the biblical psalms.

At home in Lent – An exploration of Lent through 46 objects by Gordon Giles (BRF, 2019). Here is an original way of approaching Lent, one that will encourage you to consider your own faith journey in the light of the Easter story. Inspired by Ian McGregor’s Radio 4 programme, ‘The History of the World in 100 Objects’, Gordon Giles spends each week in a different room gleaning spiritual lessons from everyday household objects, such as a mobile phone, keys, shoes, kettle.

My sour-sweet days – George Herbert and the journey of the soul by Mark Oakley (SPCK, 2020). Forty poems by George Herbert each followed by a short meditation – poetry bringing comfort, refreshment and renewed energy.
